Netflix fans gripped by crime thriller dubbed 'the best in a very long time' as it rockets up charts with 'phenomenal acting and raw emotion'

Netflix fans are already gushing about a new crime thriller dominating screens with its competitive storyline and the actors' 'raw emotion'. Currently holding the number one spot on the streaming platform is the limited series Untamed, starring Eric Bana. The murder mystery is gruesome and exciting, drawing watchers in with its captivating premise. But quickly climbing the charts is rival show To Kill A Monkey - a tense thriller hailed by watchers as gripping, impactful and technically excellent. Netflix has already released all eight episodes of the Nollywood drama, which has garnered global acclaim since its release earlier this month. The plot follows a young man who is coaxed into the 'alluring world of cybercrime, where every decision he makes draws him deeper into a moral minefield.' Our protagonist, Efe, is a struggling father who must make compromising decisions to keep afloat. His life quickly spirals into chaos when he finds himself involved in a cyber conspiracy, attempting to outrun 'the fallout of his choices'. The show by Nigerian filmmaker Kemi Adetiba stars Stella Damascus and William Benson, and has jumped sporadically in and out of the Netflix top ten most-watched shows in recent days. The story of betrayal, emotion and pivoting plot points has been lauded by fans. One reviewer wrote online: 'I think this is the best Nigerian series I have seen in a very long time. 'There are more than 1001 lessons to learn from this eight-episode packed series. At some point, you will wish the series will never end.' Another gushing watcher agreed, saying: 'This show is one of the best I have watched for a very long time. 'There were zero dull moments from the beginning to the end. The actors perfected the script and I wish we would have more of such TV series that are loaded with life lessons. 'Kemi Adetiba is a century filmmaker and television director. Not a dull moment with her production.' One called the show 'the best limited series Africa has ever produced,' while another praised the slickness of 'authentic, well written and well executed' production. Aside from the merits of the series itself, viewers pointed to the grabbing title and imagery, having been drawn in from the start. One said: 'The title of this series caught my eye. I decided to watch a little of the first episode to see how it was. I am completely hooked! 'From the first scene, the acting and story line is riveting! I binged all the episodes in two days. I highly recommend this show to anyone. 'It's very authentic, great characters - a look into a world and culture totally different from mine and so fascinating...a must watch!' And commenters noted how gripping the series was, prompting watchers to turn to the next episode. 'Surprisingly good!' said one, before adding: 'Keeps you on the edge of your seat.' The actress playing Idia in the show, Lilian Afegabi, opened up about how important the role had been to her. She wrote on social media: 'Playing Idia was more than just a role. It was a journey of becoming one with a character whose strength, vulnerability and spirit I poured my soul into. Adoring fans of the newly-released thriller sang its praises online, lauding the direction, acting and storyline 'I gave everything to bring her to life and seeing your kind words, messages and encouragement means the world to me and makes it all worth it.' This summer has seen Netflix produce a range of hard-hitting dramas that have been vying for the few top spots, as well as introducing new installments of already-loved shows. The streaming service has revealed the future of Wednesday beyond the upcoming series two. The American supernatural comedy series, which began in 2022, follows Jenna Ortega, 22, as the spooky Wednesday Addams. It is one in a series of takes over the years on The Addams Family, the eccentric fictional old-money clan, famously macabre and gothic in manner and look. The second series of the Emmy-winning programme, executive produced and often directed by horror icon Tim Burton, 66, is set for release in August. And now, it has been announced that not only will Wednesday definitely be back for a third series, a spin-off programme is currently under discussion, according to Hollywood Reporter. Fans were absolutely delighted to hear the fate of the beloved show has been secured, taking to social media to express their excitement.

A Deaf Actress Has a Message She Wants You to Hear

When Rose Ayling-Ellis is lip reading, she's guessing most of the time. 'You can get the shape of a mouth,' she said recently, but to understand what someone is saying, context is everything. 'You have to pick up body language, the mood, the vibe,' she said. Ayling-Ellis, 30, said that learning to lip read had been 'a survival technique.' The actress, who was born deaf, speaks and also uses British Sign Language, and was aided in an interview by an interpreter. In the TV crime thriller 'Code of Silence,' which arrives on Britbox on July 24, Ayling-Ellis plays a deaf woman who is recruited by the police to eavesdrop discreetly. In the show, as in life, she said, lip reading is 'like a puzzle.' When Ayling Ellis's character, Alison, watches CCTV footage of suspected gang members, she scrutinizes their facial expressions and observes how they stand. Like any good detective, Alison must study the scene, piecing together clues. In a clever visual conceit, jumbled subtitles appear onscreen and gradually unscramble as she decodes each sentence. 'Code of Silence' first screened on ITV in Britain in May, and its debut episode drew over six million viewers, according to the broadcaster. Ayling-Ellis was already known to many from 'Strictly Come Dancing,' the wildly popular BBC show that inspired the 'Dancing With the Stars' franchise. She won the show in 2021 with a routine, to Clean Bandit and Zara Larsson's 'Symphony,' that fell silent halfway to mirror her experience of being deaf. That victory made her a household name and landed her TV presenting gigs, including as a sportscaster at the 2024 Paralympic Games. But after being 'on the TV as myself quite a few times,' she said, she wanted to get back to acting. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Robert and Michelle King's crime thriller 'Happy Face' has been canceled at Paramount+ after just one season, Variety has confirmed. The news comes roughly two months after 'Happy Face' wrapped Season 1 on May 1. The show tells the real story of Melissa Moore, who in 1995, learned that her father, Keith Hunter Jesperson, was the then-infamous Happy Face Killer. The series is based on the 'Happy Face' podcast from iHeartPodcasts as well as Moore's autobiography 'Shattered Silence,' which was co-written by M. Bridget Cook. As she reconciles with her past, Melissa 'discovers the impact her father had on his victims' families and must face a reckoning of her own identity,' according to an official logline. Annaleigh Ashford and Dennis Quaid star as Melissa and her criminal father Keith, respectively. Other cast members include James Wolk, Tamera Tomakili, Khiyla Aynne, Benjamin Mackey, Connor Paton and David Harewood. The real Jesperson is currently serving life in prison in Oregon penitentiary. He murdered at least eight women, and earned his nickname from drawing smiley faces on his letters to the authorities and media. Jennifer Cacicio served as showrunner and executive producer with Robert and Michelle King, Michael Showalter, Conal Byre, Melissa G. Moore, Will Pearson and Liz Glotzer. Netflix's new crime thriller just became one of my most anticipated movies of the summer — and you need to watch the gripping trailer now

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. This summer is set to be a big one for Vanessa Kirby. She's due on the big screen next week as part of Marvel's new 'Fantastic Four' reboot, and then just a few weeks later, she's headlining a buzzy new crime thriller movie on Netflix. Premiering on the world's most popular streaming service on August 15, the film in question is called 'Night Always Comes.' The movie is described as 'a propulsive odyssey of survival' by Netflix, and now that we have a trailer, it's very quickly become one of my most anticipated new releases of the summer. The trailer is a mere two minutes long, but it gives us a pretty detailed look at the movie, and let's just say it's got me adding the movie to my watchlist almost a month ahead of time. That's the hallmark of a very good trailer. We see Kirby playing Lynette, a desperate but resourceful woman given a single night to scrounge up $25,000 to keep her family from being evicted, and her entire world falling apart. With the clock ticking, Lynette is forced to go to extreme lengths to get the money needed to secure her future. Based on Willy Vlautin's 2021 novel of the same name, and directed by Benjamin Caron, 'Night Always Comes' also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Zack Gottsagen, Stephan James, Julia Fox, Eli Roth, Randall Park and Michael Kelly. I'm especially excited to see Gottsagen appear in the cast list after his excellent performance in 2019's 'The Peanut Butter Falcon.' 'Night Always Comes' on Netflix — here's everything you need to know Alongside this intense first trailer, Netflix has also released a Tudum blog post giving us more details about the upcoming crime thriller movie. This includes an official logline: "'Night Always Comes' follows Lynette (Kirby), a woman who risks everything to secure the house that represents a future for her family. On a dangerous odyssey through a single night, Lynette is forced to confront her dark past in order to finally break free.' The Netflix original flick has been written by Sarah Conradt, who penned last year's underrated thriller 'Mothers' Instinct' starring Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain, and it represents a reunion for Kirby and Caron, who previously collaborated on the popular 'The Crown' series. 'What drew me to the film was its exploration of survival and sacrifice and the idea of quiet heroism,' said Caron. 'It asks the question, 'Who gets to feel safe, and at what cost?'' Filmed and set in Portland, Oregon, the movie takes place over a single night, which should give the thriller a real sense of momentum and add to the intensity as the clock is always ticking. Plus, Kirby received an Oscar nomination for her last Netflix project, 'Pieces of a Woman,' and is also producing in this one, so I'm pretty confident in the final result. On Kirby's performance, Caron said, 'Vanessa brings a beautifully wild energy to Lynette, making the character unpredictable and deeply, deeply human. Together, we worked on creating a character who is simply not just reacting to the world, but desperately trying to wrest control of her future, even as she teeters on the edge of self-destruction.' Between its hooky premise, best-selling source material, and strong cast list, it definitely seems like 'Night Always Comes' has all the ingredients to be a Netflix hit next month, and it could be the streaming service's best shot this year of picking up some major award nominations. As noted, 'Night Always Comes' arrives on Netflix on August 15, and I'm ready to add it to my watchlist right now. If the basic setup doesn't sell you on this movie, then the gripping new trailer is sure to tip you over the edge. I've got a feeling this one could be among Netflix's best originals of the year. Critically acclaimed crime thriller 'you need to watch immediately' finally hits Netflix - and is hailed as 'a masterpiece'

A critically acclaimed crime thriller 'you need to watch immediately' finally hits Netflix - and is hailed as 'a masterpiece'. The TV show, Sneaky Pete, hit our screens on the streaming service Amazon Prime Video back in 2015. The streaming service's synopsis reads: 'A con man (Giovanni Ribisi) on the run from a vicious gangster (Bryan Cranston) takes cover from his past by assuming the identity of his prison cellmate, Pete, "reuniting" with Pete's estranged family, a colorful, dysfunctional group that threatens to drag him into a world just as dangerous as the one he's trying to escape - and, just maybe, give him a taste of the loving family he's never had.' The series aired 30 episodes over three successful series until 2019. It stars Giovnni Ribisi as Marius Josipović / Pete Murphy, Marin Ireland as Julia Bowman, Shane McRae as Taylor Bowman, Libe Barer as Carly Bowman and Michael Drayer as Eddie Josipović. Although the show wrapped up six years ago, fans will be happy to know that they can watch the full series on Netflix. And it's no surprise considering how many positive reviews the show has got. Sneaky Pete has received a whopping 96% on critic site Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile others have rushed over to IMDB to share their positive views. 'A masterpiece.' 'Will keep you hooked!' 'Sneaky Pete is such an excellent and entertaining series! It's a show about cons, lies, deception, family, relationships, etc., etc. 'And tells it in such an amazing way that you can't wait to see the next episode! It was one of the best Amazon originals and got cancelled after 3 seasons for god knows why? Even though it ended it on a cliffhanger it's still definitely worth watching, it's not the kind of cliffhanger that will ruin the show for you. 'Once you start this amazing series you won't be able to stop watching it until you've binged the entire series so make sure you give yourself enough time to watch it. 'I promise you that it's worth every second!' 'Instantly Sucks YOU IN! Great Acting, Great Story, GREAT SHOW!' 'Excellent cast and script. Doesn't disappoint. 'Great choice for your next binge.' 'This is an excellent mystery, crime drama, con game series.' 'I'm really, really hoping for a 4th season. 'Loved every second of this and it left me wanting for more. 10 episodes was not enough.' 'A con artist hides from his past mistakes by posing as his former cellmate, deceiving a family that has no idea he's not the man they lost years ago,' Netflix's official synopsis reads. Sneaky Pete isn't the only show on Netflix that has got people talking recently. Earlier this week Stranger Things fans were left 'crying' as Netflix dropped a first trailer for the final series. The popular sci-fi show debuted in 2016 and follows a group of friends who tackle supernatural forces in Indiana. Now, a teaser for season five has been released by the streaming platform and it sent fans into a frenzy.
